Markets
Markets have a centuries-old tradition in Lienz: prince-free markets, fairs, weekly markets - the commercial life in times past was determined by the markets, which played a much more significant role than today. In addition to the two "prince-free" markets (i.e. markets which had been exempted from the market tariffs by the Counts of Gorizia) zu Leonardi and the sister parish fair of the Dominican nuns, which each lasted for two weeks, there were another four annual fairs back then: zu Philipp and Jakobi (1 May), Jakobi "im Schnitt" (25 July), Michaeli (29 September) and Thomas (21 December).
In addition to these annual fairs which also had a long tradition, there were also the weekly markets. Today, Lienz town centre is regularly enlivened by five big markets: the Lienz town market, the Easter market, the Lienz Christmas market, the flea market and the pottery market.
